Modafinil (Provigil):
Modafinil also going by the brand name Provigil is primarily employed in the treatment of excessive sleepiness that occurs due to an autoimmune condition called narcolepsy. It belongs to the group of medications that are defined as “wakefulness-promoting agents.” It basically works by altering certain levels of chemicals in the brain that are connected to sleep and wakefulness. Modafinil is prescribed for a majority of reasons, of which the most important ones are listed below.
- Narcolepsy
- Shift-work sleep disorder
- Excessive sleepiness due to obstructive apnoea
Apart from these reasons, Modafinil is used for its off-label uses, where people use the medication to perform better in academics and in exams. Hence, this drug has a separate basis for its effectiveness in keeping people focused and concentrated on a particular task.
